credit cliff

Definition

Financial situation that goes from bad to worse. For example, a business carrying large amounts of debt may default on one of their loans, which is a bad situation. The loan default may result in the company's credit rating to decline, which means they'll pay higher interest rates on future credit if they are allowed to borrow at all.
