Definition
Cantonal banks are commercial banks owned by the Swiss government that account for around 30% of the banking sector in the country. The canton in which the bank is established is used as a guarantee for assets held. There are 24 cantonal banks including the third and fourth largest banks in the country namely, Zürcher Kantonalbank and Banque Cantonale Vaudoise.
