A segment of the broader stock market that tends to move contrary to the general trend of the market. Generally much more visible during a declining market in which a group of stocks associated with a particular industry or market sector move higher over a period of time. For example, agriculture-related stocks mounted a sustained climb during a steep bear market decline in 1973 - 1974.
