electronic benefit transfer (EBT)

Definition

A system of distributing government benefits to households. The benefit is deposited to individual accounts and the beneficiaries can claim it through the use of a debit card. Food stamps and cash benefits are among the most common electronic benefit transfers. This type of transfer has been used in the US since 2004.
