indexed certificate of deposit (indexed CD)

A savings certificate that has a variable interest rate matching the interest rate of a specific market index (such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average). Although the index may underperform leading to a lower than expected rate of return, the principle is protected and does not lose value. Also called index-linked certificate of deposit.
