mortgage credit certificates (MCC)

Issued by certain jurisdictions allowing homeowners to claim a tax credit (not to be confused with a tax deduction) on a portion of the interest that they pay on the mortgage of their primary residence. It can be used to lower monthly mortgage payments. The Internal Revenue Service has capped this credit at $2,000/year.
