Definition

A foreign branch of a U.S chartered bank that carries out financial transactions outside the United States. These branches accept deposits from foreign banks and other offshore banking units and provide access to the Eurocurrency markets with little or no regulatory requirements. Among the major offshore banking centers for U.S banks are the Bahamans, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Panama and Singapore.
