crude oil

Definition

An organic and viscous liquid comprised of various hydrocarbon compounds that exists naturally below the Earth's surface. Depending on the geological structure of its reservoir, subsurface conditions and the methods used for extraction, its composite structure can vary between heavy fluids, solids and gaseous liquids. Due to its limited supply and concentration of producers, crude oil is a price-sensitive commodity exchanged on the open market.
