triple bottom line (TBL)

An expanded reporting framework used in corporate accounting, developed in the 1980s to measure a company's commitment to ecological and social responsibilities in addition to financial performance. The premise behind TBL is that companies are accountable to its stakeholders, not just its shareholders, and they need to manage to the three bottom lines of people, planet and profits.
