pink slip

Slang term for an employee's termination notice, sometimes included with an employee's paycheck. A pink slip does not always indicate a psyical written notice, the phrase also can be used to indicate the overall situation of being laid off. The origin of the phrase is unknown, as there is no record of termination notices ever being written on pink paper.
