soft commission arrangement
Definition
A type of fee arrangement in which the commission fee is paid on a non-cash basis. An example would be an equity research company providing its stock analysis to a brokerage company in exchange for free transactions. Because the commission is not standard it is less transparent, creating the possibility of a conflict of interest.
