A formal request for funds to start a project. An appropriation request is often used for capital investment projects, which generally have a high upfront cost but can show a positive return in a later time period. The request allows the appropriate management personnel to review the project. For example, the manufacturing division of a large corporation may send an appropriate request for new machinery to the home office for review.
