Definition

The United States official responsible for the supervision and examination of nationally-chartered banks. The comptroller of the currency is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, serves as one of three chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and typically serves a five-year term. Banks can be liquidated by the comptroller of the currency if they fail to meet federal guidelines.
