The action taken by an investor of selling securities in order to improve their tax situation. Often times, an investor will sell securities in order to offset a pending gain, as a way of balancing things out so they won't be hit on their income taxes. This action is frequently seen in December, at the end of the calendar year, as investors prepare for the upcoming tax season.
