Definition

Weighted average of a group of commodities used as a representation of the price and/or performance of physical commodities on a commodity exchange. One of these indices often uses the prices of futures contracts for commodities that are listed on commodity exchanges. A commodity index can be an energy price index, a metals price index, or even an agriculture price index.
