extension of time for filing taxes
A request made with a federal or state internal revenue department to allow for more time to file income taxes. Each internal revenue department has strict criteria that must be met to be even considered for an extension. Individuals usually request extensions if they are unable to make a tax payment by the designated due date. Some extensions may only be for two weeks and some may be for a year or more.
