Market Index Target Term Securities (MITTS)

Definition

Unsecured debt obligations issued by Merrill Lynch, Co., which may or may not earn an investor a return, but still require the investor to pay taxes on the securities. MITTS do guarantee the original amount invested, so investors can receive that back even if no other return in yielded. MITTS may also pay a percentage of any appreciation acquired during the maturity period.
