pik (payment-in-kind) securities

Definition
Variation of a bond or preferred stock that distributes interest or dividend payments through the issuance of additional bonds or preferred stock. This type of security may often be used if a company does not have enough cash on hand to make interest or dividend payments to recipients. During a takeover or buyout, pik securities may also be used to eliminate some of the costs associated with the acquisition.
