resolution trust corporation (RTC)

Former federal agency that was created in 1989 to oversee and regulate federal loans and savings institutions. After the savings and loans crisis of the 1980s, the agency was put in charge of helping savings and loan institutions that had become insolvent. The agency was dismantled in 1996 and the FDIC and SAIF were put in charge of the responsibilities that the RTC previously managed.
